Gearbox Software, an award-winning, independent developer of interactive entertainment, responsible for acclaimed franchises such as Half-Life, Brothers in Arms, Counter-Strike, Duke Nukem, Borderlands, and more, has distinguished itself as one of the most respected independent video game makers in the world. With talented artists in high demand and realizing that undiscovered talent might not have access to the right tools and education, Gearbox decided that it was time to establish a new type of remote training infrastructure that it could use to teach students around the globe. The group knew that a cloud-powered Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) would be necessary, and that GPUs would be needed so that students would have the power to run the required software and workloads. With a vision in mind for how it could develop educational curriculums for training the next generation of game developers, Gearbox turned to Six Nines to help make their dream a reality.

Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, SPLICE is a post-production studio offering a range of services, including visual effects (VFX), motion design, and color, for episodic television and independent films. Despite its relatively small size, SPLICE’s 12-person VFX team works on some of today’s biggest titles in television and streaming. Its portfolio includes The Walking Dead, DC Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, Daredevil, All American, and Once Upon a Time. Although the shows and movies SPLICE supports reach national and international audiences, the market for VFX artists in Minneapolis is relatively small. As the company began anticipating growth, it sought to use the cloud to bring on artists from around the country to expand business and reach. Six Nines guided SPLICE through a proof of concept (POC) of virtual workstations and a render farm on Amazon Web Services (AWS), demonstrating SPLICE could make a virtually seamless transition to a hybrid cloud model.

FutureWorks is a leading end-to-end film production services provider. The company’s 300 VFX specialists based in Mumbai and Chennai support films and television shows for today’s largest streaming platforms, including Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+ Hotstar in India. Given the fast pace and rapid evolution of production in the media industry, and to maintain strong working relationships with clients, FutureWorks must stay a step ahead of their technical needs. When FutureWorks decided it was time to explore the potential of a virtual workstation and render farm environment in the cloud, it turned to Six Nines for help setting up a pilot on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

HPC - ELECTRIC DESIGN AUTOMATION (EDA) d-Matrix

d-Matrix, a start-up with a mission to build and deploy the world’s first brain-inspired AI compute engine for a broad class of inferencing workloads, was preparing to prototype a first-of-its-kind semiconductor from the ground up. The team wanted to hit the ground running and get their first chip taped out without the hindrance of designing an on-prem IT environment. The company decided that it wanted to use Azure as the backbone of its IT environment and approached Six Nines about creating an interface layer to access its resources efficiently, reliably, and in a way that would scale with it as the business grew. Together, the partners got to work, and d-Matrix taped out its first chip entirely on the Azure cloud.

HPC - FINANCIAL SERVICES Global Parametrics

Global Parametrics harnesses advances in climate science, data modeling and financial engineering to create innovative risk transfer products that mitigate the economic effects of extreme climate and natural disasters in emerging markets. Six Nines expedited the use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) for Global Parametrics and enabled them to migrate a numerical weather model used to inform risk transfer contracts from on prem to the cloud.

HPC - ELECTRIC DESIGN AUTOMATION (EDA) Cadence

Cadence turned to Six Nines, a premier Information Technology consulting company specializing in helping businesses move to Amazon Web Services (AWS). Following the discovery phase of the Six Nines Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF), they isolated the Cadence internal software development group as a great DevOps automation candidate. The workloads primarily consisted of High Performance Compute (HPC) clusters doing regression testing. The requirements for the project were that the clusters had to be rapidly deployed, scaled and drained in an automated fashion.

Six Nines designed and implemented an automated solution for a U.S.-based luxury electric automaker in order to deploy an extremely complex, highly scalable Hybrid High Performance Compute (HPC) environment on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The solution, which enables the automaker’s team of engineers to run ANSYS Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for designing and building innovative new car models, utilizes AWS compute-optimized instances, orchestrated by the Amazon EnginFrame HPC Solution.
